I really don't know why we get them anymore. I haven't used one since they took all the phone booths away. I'm a whitepages.com kinda girl.
Is there a way to opt out of getting them? It seems a shame to recycle them when it wasn't even necessary to lose the tree in the first place. (Some tree hugger is sobbing somewhere right now.)
I'm pretty sure the only people who use phone books are those same people who still write checks at the grocery store.

LOL A few years ago, some stores implemented the electronic check system that took a person's check and scanned it, and then the check was given back to the person.
ReplyDeleteI was at Old Navy the first time I saw that system and the lady who got her check back was irate that the store didn't keep it. She said it was "wasted money", blah, blah, blah. I just had to laugh. Get a freaking debit card already. ;-)
We recently got our phone book too and it went straight into the recycle bin. I remember thinking, "They still make these?!?" Such a waste of paper!

ReplyDeleteI'm always surprised when I see it sitting outside my door and then a week later I get another one and maybe one more. Straight to the recycling bin. I don't know why they make them anymore with the internet and 411! Do that many people have landlines that are listed??
ReplyDeleteUmm...I still write checks every now in then. It is usually because I don't have any money in my checking account so I kinda "float" the check! LOL! So sad, I know.
ReplyDeleteMy hubs used to work for Yellow Book. I would always ask him why people would even bother advertising in a phone book anyways. he really didn't understand the point either. And within 2 years of being there they closed the office down. Now the few people they still have work remotely and barely make anything. It is such a waste to print them, and like Babes Mami I always get tons of them too! It is crazy!
I'm with you. The only reason why I keep them is because I feel bad that some tree was chopped down for a worthless book that I never use. There should be some opt-in box on the phone bill that you have to check if you want the phone book. Those of us who pay our bills online and don't get a bill in the mail anymore wouldn't need to check the box, because we do everything on the internet anyway, right?

I use them here in the back of beyond because they are more convenient than looking it up on the computer, service is sketchy here for cells and we still have our land line too. also, not everything can be found on line here, crazy but true.

One of my husband's friends works for the phone company and he thought it would be funny to leave 6 or 7 phone books - one in our driveway, one under the truck, one on our front stoop, one on our side stoop - you get the idea. Like I needed the first one! The kids thought it was great - they all got their own! (They have since quietly disappeared... shhh, don't tell them).

I could handle it if we only got one a year but I usually get at least five. And have your ever noticed in communities or apartment buildings they leave a whole stack of them that eventually have to be carted away since no one wants them?

ReplyDeleteI work at Wal Mart and we use the electronic check system. It still takes just as long! Learn how to pay with a card already...or use cash, you will have a happier cashier if you do :DD

An old employee asked me to find out all the names and numbers and contact details of every opperational business in our area for a magazine launch. Anyway I really felt like sending her a copy of the phone book which has residential and business listings and say here use this and highlight the ones who want a copy of the mag. But no muggins here had to ring around, use and abuse google directories etc. Was long.com

Hey! I still write checks at the grocery store! LOL I have no debit card. Or credit cards. BUT that is about the only check I write. Does that count for something? LOL And I, too, cannot believe how many times they seem to update the damned phone book a year. That's a lot of trees!
