Short and sweet....or sarcastic.

I just got my new phone book...which I will give to my neighbor's kid to take to the recycling club at school...where all of my other phone books go.

I really don't know why we get them anymore. I haven't used one since they took all the phone booths away. I'm a whitepages.com kinda girl.

Is there a way to opt out of getting them? It seems a shame to recycle them when it wasn't even necessary to lose the tree in the first place. (Some tree hugger is sobbing somewhere right now.)

I'm pretty sure the only people who use phone books are those same people who still write checks at the grocery store.

*waving to you, Mom!*

  1. LOL A few years ago, some stores implemented the electronic check system that took a person's check and scanned it, and then the check was given back to the person.

I was at Old Navy the first time I saw that system and the lady who got her check back was irate that the store didn't keep it. She said it was "wasted money", blah, blah, blah. I just had to laugh. Get a freaking debit card already. ;-)

  2. We recently got our phone book too and it went straight into the recycle bin. I remember thinking, "They still make these?!?" Such a waste of paper!

  3. I still write checks at the grocery, but I do not use a regular phone book. My husband does, though.

  4. I'm always surprised when I see it sitting outside my door and then a week later I get another one and maybe one more. Straight to the recycling bin. I don't know why they make them anymore with the internet and 411! Do that many people have landlines that are listed??

  5. Umm...I still write checks every now in then. It is usually because I don't have any money in my checking account so I kinda "float" the check! LOL! So sad, I know.

My hubs used to work for Yellow Book. I would always ask him why people would even bother advertising in a phone book anyways. he really didn't understand the point either. And within 2 years of being there they closed the office down. Now the few people they still have work remotely and barely make anything. It is such a waste to print them, and like Babes Mami I always get tons of them too! It is crazy!

  6. I'm with you. The only reason why I keep them is because I feel bad that some tree was chopped down for a worthless book that I never use. There should be some opt-in box on the phone bill that you have to check if you want the phone book. Those of us who pay our bills online and don't get a bill in the mail anymore wouldn't need to check the box, because we do everything on the internet anyway, right?

  7. It will take a generation or two to get rid of the hold outs. Our grandparents (and some of parents) just can't come to terms with technology.

  8. *waving to you Mom!* OMG! Too freaking funny. My mom would still use a phone book too, if she wasn't legally blind!

Aye! You're so right on this WHY DO WE STILL GET PHONE BOOKS!?!?

  9. I use them here in the back of beyond because they are more convenient than looking it up on the computer, service is sketchy here for cells and we still have our land line too. also, not everything can be found on line here, crazy but true.

  10. Crap! That would be too! I use checks at the grocery store too. ONLY because my brain is so frazzled half of the time that I forget I have a card sometimes! LOL

  12. I am with you 100%. (I hope that wasn't your mom I sighed audibly at in the store.......)

They say bar soap and wrist watches are the next things to become obsolete. (I don't know who "they" are though.)

  13. One of my husband's friends works for the phone company and he thought it would be funny to leave 6 or 7 phone books - one in our driveway, one under the truck, one on our front stoop, one on our side stoop - you get the idea. Like I needed the first one! The kids thought it was great - they all got their own! (They have since quietly disappeared... shhh, don't tell them).

  14. UGH check writers at the grocery store....

I haven't used a phone book in ages...

  15. Mine sit in my driveway until recycle day. I don't get it either.

  16. Any household over the age of 60 should get them and that's it.

Have you tried 411.com? It's just as fun as whitepages.com.

  17. I could handle it if we only got one a year but I usually get at least five. And have your ever noticed in communities or apartment buildings they leave a whole stack of them that eventually have to be carted away since no one wants them?

  18. I hate getting the phone book! Seriously, it sits on my front step annoying me forever before I finally get one of my lazy kids to put it in recyling!

  19. I work at Wal Mart and we use the electronic check system. It still takes just as long! Learn how to pay with a card already...or use cash, you will have a happier cashier if you do :DD

  20. I get like 3 different phone books throughout the year. Kinda ridiculous for a tiny town like this one!

  21. I run over them... I mean get them a few times a year. I really don't understand the point!

What really gets me about check writers are the ones who sign their name and expect the register to print the rest of the info.

  22. I got to thinking about this the other day actually. Why in the hell do they still make these things and then force them on people??? I mean, people can just use the internet of 411 or their gps for these things.

Then I remembered my grandma... she wouldn't have a CLUE about what to do if they quit dropping them off every few months.

  23. Ugh! I know what you mean. I wish there was some way of letting them know you don't want or need one when it's time for them to come out!

  24. Damn, I do still occasionally find use for a phone book, and still write checks at the grocery store as well.

But we get about 3 to 4 different phone books dropped off here a year. Now that's a definite waste.

  25. Wait...they still give out phonebooks? That is such a waste...

  26. If there are still phone books, why do we have iphones and google? Honestly!!

  27. There oughta be a campaign of some sort to get rid of the stupid phone books. I pick mine up off the porch and it goes right into the recycling box. lame

  30. SO true!!! I keep saying that, every time we get one. I have to look into that locally. Find out how to stop this tree-killing bidness!

  31. The look so different to the ones we get here. An old employee asked me to find out all the names and numbers and contact details of every opperational business in our area for a magazine launch. Anyway I really felt like sending her a copy of the phone book which has residential and business listings and say here use this and highlight the ones who want a copy of the mag. But no muggins here had to ring around, use and abuse google directories etc. Was long.com

Take care and well done for recycling though :-) KC xx

  32. Hey! I still write checks at the grocery store! LOL I have no debit card. Or credit cards. BUT that is about the only check I write. Does that count for something? LOL And I, too, cannot believe how many times they seem to update the damned phone book a year. That's a lot of trees!

  33. I was actually thinking about this the other day! It's funny to me. I write a check once a month for rent, and I wouldn't if I didn't have to. I've had the same checks since 2005!

    ReplyDelete
  34. We still get phone books too. They just sit in the cabinet. I rarely use them.

    ReplyDelete
  35. You're so cute..."Waving to you mom!"...I think the people who use the phone books are the same ones who won't go out and buy their toddlers booster seats for the kitchen table. Nothing more secure than a phonebook roped to a chair.

  36. Every once in a while someone will be at my house and ask for a phone book. I always look at them a little funny, like they are living in the wrong century! Can you say internet? Yeah, I recycle mine too. Seems like a waste.

  37. SERIOUSLY IS THIS THE LAST TIME YOU BLOGGED?
cuz even I read this shit.

  38. they still make phonebooks? I don't even know if we still get them or if my roommate is just that smart to recycle them prior to even bringing it in the house.

    and what's a check? :)
